The Warriors’ hopes for this season have fallen into turmoil as the season-ending injury to the team’s All-Star forward Jimmy Butler, puts the franchise’s future into question, causing immense speculation for potential stars arriving in the bay.
The Warriors acquisition of Butler from the Heat last February completely turned the Warriors’ around with the team going on a 23-9 run to enter the postseason as the 7th seed. While their postseason run ended in the second round, the success of overcoming the stout defense of the No. 2-seed Houston Rockets in the first round gave the Warriors high expectations for their 2026 season. .
Unfortunately, the high momentum caught during the middle of the season would be stopped in devastating fashion in a game against the Miami Heat. After catching an entry pass under the basket, Butler left the game after injuring his knee, later being diagnosed as a torn ACL, sidelining him for the rest of the season.
Despite the immense value of Butler, it’s not in the teams best interest to keep him for the rest of his 2-year contract, as maximizing 37-year old Stephen Curry’s window should be their highest priority.
As the Feb. 5 trade deadline approaches, the Warriors will have to look at their current roster and begin to realize just who to put on the table for the trade market, while preferably looking for “win-now” pieces.
The main trade piece for the Warriors is 23-year old forward Jonathan Kuminga, a player whose relationship with the organization as a whole had become tainted beyond repair.
If you look at potential trade locations for Kuminga, the Heat stand out as a highly rumored option, as the Warriors are speculated to be interested in bringing back former Warrior Andrew Wiggins to the lineup.
While Wiggins’ return to the bay would help in filling the hole Butler had left at the forward position, while also coming with a sense of safeness knowing his success with the team in the past, there is a layer of complacency in a trade involving bringing home a player the team had just parted ways with. A part of the Warriors’ struggles in the latter half of Curry’s career is a lack of adaptation towards the ever-changing landscape of the league, ironic for a team that revolutionized the sport with their three-point brilliance just a decade ago.
What could be another angle for the Warriors is pairing Kuminga with Butler in a deal for a bigger star, with past rumors of this type of trade including talented players such as Anthony Davis, and even Lebron James.
However, a hypothetical that is almost impossible to overlook would be bringing in former MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the Greek forward did not formally request a trade out of his longtime home in Milwaukee, he has been the biggest star in recent trade discussions
Antetokounmpo would bring several desperately needed aspects to the Warriors, some that they have been missing for Curry’s entire Warriors tenure: absolute dominance under the basket, rebounding, and elite shot-blocking. While along with Kuminga and Butler they would have to give up a plethora of future draft picks, the pairing of Curry and Antetokounmpo would easily put the Warriors in title contention, as a combination of all-time talent such as them is just insanely rare to come by.
