The Skyline women’s wrestling team continued its development this season, earning two medals and gaining experience at its Bakersfield meet on Saturday, March 21. The Trojans competed with a smaller roster but showed improvement.
Standout performances for the Skyline came from Saphire Altamirano and Lynelle Legados, who led the group a total of six match wins and two medals.
These two were supported by Jax Saeed, Yaharia Torres, and Hailey/Mika Ronquillo, who each battled through closely contested matches, according to head coach Olga Camacho.
Legados said the team is in a strong position, and that each match reveals areas for improvement.
“We are in a pretty good spot, every match we are finding stuff to improve on,” Legados said “The coaches are doing a really good job of implementing that work.”
Altamirano said that even though the team has competed in meets without its full lineup—due to injuries and other reasons—they have still performed well.
“For the girls that are competing, they are doing really good,” Altamirano said
Assistant coach Geovanny Aguilar said the team did not perform as well as they wanted at the Bakersfield tournament, but noted the team is still in a good position moving forward. Aguilar said he believes the coaching staff as a whole have done a solid job preparing the girls and it has shown in their performances.
“As coaches collaboratively we have been taking the right steps and preparing the team the right way,” Aguilar said.
Head coach Olga Camacho also said the tournament provided a valuable opportunity for her players to compete at a high level while continuing to develop and improve their skills.
“This tournament was a great opportunity for our athletes to compete at a high level and continue developing their skills,” said Camacho in a press release regarding the match.
Torres also said that although not every player places at each meet, the team has shown significant improvement from the beginning of the season to now.
“I think we are doing well, obviously we have our details and things we need to work on, but overall a lot of the girls have been doing really well, ” Torres said.
The Trojans will look to use their growth and experiences in the team’s quick turnaround for its first home meet on Wednesday, March 25.
