Skyline Baseball had another offensive explosion scoring seven runs in the fourth inning that led to a 11-6 victory over the Cabrillo College Seahawks, extending their winning streak to five games.
Skyline sophomore outfielder Jack Ruegg who once went for 3 for 4 said that beating three different teams this week showed just how focused the team was this week.
“It’s just good we can stay locked in the whole time,” Ruegg said. “Yesterday was a tough game. Coming in still and just beating them handily felt good.”
Skyline fell behind early but quickly responded. Ruegg said the early deficit did not concern the team.
“I don’t think it mattered to any of us,” Ruegg said. “I think we all knew we were going to hit. We all knew we were going to score a lot of runs, so honestly it didn’t faze anybody.”
Skyline freshman starting pitcher Anthony Kabrich made his first start of the season, pitching four innings and allowing two runs while striking out two. He said he credited the offense for providing support.
Despite the solid outing, Kabrich said there is room for improvement.
“I just got to settle down in the first inning,” Kabrich said. “I gave up two in the first inning, but… I’ve just got to settle down and let myself do the work.”
Skyline head coach Tony Brunicardi said the team handled the challenge of facing three different opponents on consecutive days very well.
“It’s always good to get wins, but we’re trying to take it one at a time,” Brunicardi said. “Getting ourselves prepared for conference and then into the postseason — this is a good test. Three straight days, three different teams, so you have to quickly make adjustments. The guys did a really good job.”
Brunicardi said the fourth inning stood out because of the team’s consistency throughout the lineup.
“I think from top to bottom we did a really good job just grinding out at-bats,” Brunicardi said.
Skyline returns to action Tuesday, March 3, with a road game against Monterey Peninsula, seeking its sixth consecutive win.
