Skyline has recently invested in television monitors that are due to be installed and online in every building by the end of spring semester.
The primary purpose of these monitors is to get more in touch with the students, said Communications Manager Christianne Marra. The bulk of the screen will be taken up by announcements for students, such as upcoming events and activities. Additionally, there will be a live Google calendar feed that updates automatically whenever changes are made to Skyline’s schedule.
“It’s a great way to reach students,” Marra said. “It’s another way to advertise and make sure that students are in the loop with regard to not only what’s going on on campus but around the world, especially in terms of the news scroll that you see at the bottom.”
As far as what specifically will be displayed in the announcements section, Marra says that the department is in the process of establishing policies and procedures. Items will be collected and then placed on the screens to advertise student events in a constantly scrolling feed.
“Any number of ads could be placed up there at any one point, depending on how many we’ve received from the college community,” Marra said. “And then obviously as the events happen, the ads will disappear and new ones will replace (them).”
Another feature of the new monitors will be specific information about the building the TV is in, such as which offices and rooms are on which floor. Aside from purely Skyline-related content, the monitors will have weather forecasts and news feeds from sources like CNN and ESPN.
“All of these things are changeable,” Marra said. “But right now we’ve decided that for consistency purposes, this is how we’ll set it up.”
Skyline encourages student feedback about the monitors, and Marra said one of the best places to tell the college what you think is on Facebook. There is an existing page for the college, and students are urged to utilize it.
“[Facebook] is a great way to get a discussion going. . . . That’s another form in this day and age of social media to kind of interact with people,” says Marra. “The Facebook page is monitored, checked every day. It certainly doesn’t mean that just because you put something on there that (it’s) going to change, but it’s a good way to get your voice heard.”
The only screen currently in operation is the one in building 6, but several are installed in other buildings and will soon be in every building on campus.
