Skyline’s badminton team suffered a loss of 19-2 to De Anza College on May 4.
The game was the last match before the conference finals on May 8. The finals will include players from Skyline as well as De Anza College, San Francisco City College, Mission College and Fresno City College.
Despite the loss, badminton coach Jan Fosberg is optimistic that some Skyline students will make it to the state championships.
“Competition this year is pretty tough,” Fosberg said. “I feel strongly that we will qualify at least two people.”
During the finals, eight individual players and six doubles teams will be picked to continue on to the state level. Fosberg estimates that four to five Skyline students will be competing individually along with three doubles teams.
Fosberg said that the team would have a few days to practice before the finals and she hopes they do well.
The badminton team currently has eight players, all female. According to Fosberg, they all have several years of experience, either from playing at Skyline or at a high school level.
Skyline’s badminton program has produced several state champions in the past.
“We have people who can qualify,” says Nour Abudamous.
Abudamous, who has been on Skyline’s team for two years now, said she was happy with how she played against De Anza. While she wished more students would come to watch games, she said that the turnout this year was better than before.
Although Skyline has not been doing as well as their competition, the team is still having a lot of fun.
“We don’t have the best match results,” says assistant badminton coach Jon Lee. “But we have a good time.”
