On a cold, wet, foggy evening on Nov. 6 at Skyline College, the women’s soccer team achieved an impressive milestone, bringing home the title of Coast Conference Champions for the first time in school history.
In addition to winning their division, the team ended up with an undefeated season, another first in school history, and they were the only team in all of Northern California to accomplish this remarkable feat.
Their final record was 16-0-4, giving them a third seed spot in playoffs and a guaranteed home game for the first round of playoffs.
The game that clinched their title was against De Anza, last year’s conference champion. Emotions ran high during the match with both sides showing a lot of skill and determination as Skyline played to win the conference and De Anza attempted to take them down.
The game ended in a tight 0-0 draw and was Skyline’s only tie during conference play.
“We had opportunities to score,” said Kevin Corsiglia, head soccer coach of the women’s soccer team. “It was a fairly even game as we knew we needed to win or tie and De Anza knew they had to beat us.”
Fortunately the Lady Trojans did not give away any points, in large part due to goalie Marie Torres.
“Our key this year has been our defense, starting with our goalie,” said Corsiglia. “She’s done really well this year overall and is a huge reason why we had 16 shutouts.”
Other team leaders are fullbacks Taylor Hill and Jenna Motylewski who have both been consistent and good leaders.
“They’ve done a very good job of shutting down the other side,” said Corsiglia.
When asked if their undefeated streak added any extra pressure on the team, Coach Corsiglia had a surprising answer.
“No, it didn’t add any pressure. We were just focused on winning a conference championship which is something we’ve never done before after 11 years of the women’s soccer program here at Skyline,” Corsiglia said.
The team is currently focused on getting healthy as a few key players are still recovering from injuries that occurred earlier in the season. Coach Corsiglia said that fortunately the team had enough depth on the bench that they’ve played well and will continue to play well even though some starters are out at the moment.
Skyline will face Yuba College in the first round of playoffs this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Skyline College.
Come cheer on the Lady Trojans as they look to continue their unbeaten streak and add to their already admirable achievements. The way they have been playing all season, going all the way to the state championships is no longer a dream but a very possible reality.
