If you were here last spring semester you might remember a big thing called, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
On Oct 16 and 17, the Skyline’s Theater Club reintroduced the cult classic of RHPS in full live action, the actors playing the parts on stage while the movie played on the screen behind them.
“The Rocky Picture Show” is a spin-off of science fiction and horror films with smashing comedy. The story is told by a criminologist (Michael Corzoncoff) who follows Brad (Garrett Hom) and Janet (Sterling Wolper), newly engaged and stranded in the middle of nowhere after they get a flat tire on a rainy night.
They approach an old castle and see if they can use the telephone to call for assistance. They are invited in by a strange butler by the name of Riff Raff (Ed Stanley), only to find themselves surrounded in an unusual party where everyone is singing and dancing.
The extravaganza is hosted by Dr. Frank N. Furter (Abel Gomez) a tyrannical know-it-all transvestite.
The theater club uses RHPS to investigate film and live theater by encouraging audience members to sway their hips, sing and dance along, and scream profane remarks, as they become part of the parody “sex-core” experience.
The show attracted many fans who clearly knew RHPS – several spectators arrived dressed in barely-there skimpy outfits. The true die-hard movie enthusiasts were decked from head to toe in various costumes from the show, and these fans immediately became part of the act.
Not all the attendees were dressed to impress – several had the mark of a “V” on their forehead. Can you guess what that stood for? I’ll give you a hint: V-I-R-G-I-N.
If it was your first time seeing the RHPS then you were stamped with the mark. The not so shy “virgins” were invited on stage to perform various humorous and titillating acts, the winners – apart from being “de-virginized” – received a goody bag full of noise making nick-knacks and other props that drove the spirit of Rocky Horror full throttle.
The show ran for two nights, a “matinee” performance at 9pm on Friday and a true RHPS-style midnight showing on Saturday.
The midnight show had people gripping their seats and laughing hysterically at all the heavy-duty sexual puns.
In true Rocky Horror fashion the cast delivered some of the sexiest moves foggy San Bruno has probably ever seen. The audience visually experienced a hyper-sexualized interactive show with all the glitz and glamour any professional playhouse could offer.
The idea for presenting the RHPS was conceptualized by director, Fredrick Fontelar, Psychology major.
“I’m proud how hard we worked at it,” said Fredrick Fontelar, director of RHPS. “We have come far at getting Theater Club out there. It’s a good thing.”
