Cafe Grillades is a cute little place tucked into the back corner of the BayHill Shopping Center near the Mollie Stone’s market. Specializing in Mediterranean food, this cafe is best known for its delicious crepes, both savory and sweet. The menu does have other tasty choices ranging from paninis to salads, hearty breakfast entrees to their namesake grillades. Grillades are tasty grilled skewered meats that typically come with your choice of potato and a side salad.
Namesake aside, they really shine when it comes to their crepes. They have about 10 regular savory crepes on the menu and a daily or weekly special is usually handwritten on the chef’s board. I highly recommend getting any savory crepes with the buckwheat batter as it adds a nice texture and taste as well as being nutritionally better for you than the regular white flour. The dessert crepes are equally varied and customers can also combine and design any kind of crepe they want from a comprehensive list of sweet ingredients. Make sure you get the white flour batter for these as you want a more neutral foil for all the sugary goodness inside. The dessert crepes can also come a la mode so if you’re in the mood for ice cream, they can definitely fulfill that craving.
My absolute favorite thing about this restaurant is my discovery of one of the most magical beverages ever–hot Nutella. Yes, you read that correctly. They make hot Nutella like other places make regular hot chocolate! If you love Nutella and/or hot chocolate, you must order this drink. It tastes even better than it sounds, filling your mouth with a luscious nutty chocolate cream sweetness that I cannot begin to adequately describe within the constraints of this column. Let me just say that I am sure you will thank me after having one or two or nine of these.
When you finally do manage to lift you head up from your cup(s) of hot Nutella, you’ll notice that the staff is warm and friendly, making sure diners are taken care of while not being too obtrusive. The food portions are generously sized and prices are very reasonable with entrees ranging from $5-10. The ambiance is casual and there are always a few small tables set outside to enjoy sunny days.
So if you’re fixing for a good crepe or want to be indoctrinated into the wonder that is hot Nutella, do be sure to stop by Cafe Grillades!
