Despite the somewhat chaotic events of September 2, the staff of Skyline’s child development center remained dedicated to keeping the children entrusted to their care safe from harm and worry.

The child development center, located only a short distance away from the scene of the shooting, was locked down with the rest of campus when police arrived to deal with the situation.  Most parents were unable to get to their children, though the staff managed to keep the children mostly calm – and prevent rumors from spreading – until they were escorted to safety around 5 pm.

A source inside the child development center said that the shooting took place during the children’s naptime. The children were sound asleep during the shooting, and the staff was in the middle of a meeting.

“A few of the [staff] members began getting text messages informing them of an active shooter on campus,” the source told us.

Within 15 minutes of the shooting, they were informed to close the door and take cover. They said that none of the staff could recall hearing the gunfire, but nevertheless acted quickly to ensure the safety of the children.

Before long, panic-stricken phone calls from the parents began pouring in, concerned for the safety of their children.  A few of the parents were even able to get to day care before the police blocked off the entire Pacific heights buildings.

Upon the parents’ arrival, they were immediately instructed to not say anything to their children about the shooting.

According to the source, there were only three students that had a vague idea of what was going on.

“Two of our older boys were not fearful but admiring of the SWAT team,” the source said, referring to the officers that escorted them to a designated location where parents were finally able to pick their children up.

The staff of the child development center was very impressed and grateful to all of the officers that were present on campus, and the staff appreciates how cautious the officers were of their actions around the children.

There were noticeably fewer children at the day care center on Friday, September 4. The source believes it was largely due to the shooting, but partly due to Labor Day weekend as well.

They went on to share that they “still feel safe on campus” – and in essence, feel even safer due to the response time of the school, the San Bruno police department, and all the other agencies that came out and dedicated their time to keeping Skyline safe.
