Skyline is really working hard on to catching up with the times by rebuilding most of the school.
Building 6, the new cafeteria, student center, and bookstore have been built fewer than 3 years ago, and it took even less than that to build it. Around the time it was finished building, Skyline was approved of a separate budget just for new construction. The new construction will improve the quality of the previous buildings, since the buildings that are not renovated are at least around 40 years of age.
Building 4n will be built where the old bookstore last stand.
Building 4n will be consisting of a fitness/ training room, a classroom for Dance, Yoga and Pilates, and a new administrative office. Furthermore, they will move the cosmetology program to the new Wellness building. With all these new rooms, it is also said to be smaller.
The other new building they are building is 11N. It is supposedly the new automotive building although it is also noticeably smaller but will have the required equipments that are needed in the classes.
Many other areas are also being renovated. Building 1’s theater will be renovated as well as all three floors. Building 5 will also be renovated. The Loma Chica will also be renovated to a new Child Development Center.
Also the Building next to Skyline College, Pacific Heights, will be torn down. The building will be demolished into a brand new parking lot.
Many believe that Pacific Heights is necessary to be removed. “It’s not up to code,” Victoria Morrow, Skyline president, states about the Pacific Heights building. “It is only being used as swing space.” A swing space is where classes that don’t have a room will be used as space.
Many students at the campus believe that Pacific Heights is their least favorite building. One of those students is Vivian Mak, cosmetology student. “Many students enter this building feeling tired as soon as they enter,” Mak said. It barely space and is so isolated from the other buildings they are not up to date with the main campus. They believe it is a good thing to tear down Pacific Heights.
The buildings are not the only one that is being renovated; the streets are being renovated too. The new loop road will be located where Pacific Heights stands. Also new signs to locate the campus will be more visually visible.
By summer of 2009 will also mark the beginning of the quad, the middle of the campus and in front of building 6, will be renovated as well.
The new buildings, building 11n and Wellness Building 4n, will be done by spring 2011.
