The Skyline College women’s soccer team went to the Northern California playoffs on Nov. 22 for the first time since the 2003 season, but lost in the first round to Cosumnes River College 3-1.Cosumnes River was the first to score, which gave them the motivation to take over the game. However, the first half of the game was very close. “I was on edge the whole time,” Skyline player Michelle Corrola said. “They scored their first goal and we sort of fell apart.”Skyline player Simone Torres scored for Skyline with about 20 minutes left in the game and freshman player Laura Cremen got the assist. “The game was really exciting and it felt good to help Skyline make it to playoffs for the first time in a while,” Cremen said.Skyline being the 15th seed knew this game would be a challenge because Cosumnes River was the 2nd seed. “We were right in it with the number 2 seed,” Skyline’s Head Coach, Kevin Corsiglia, said. “We had good scoring opportunities, defenders were playing very well and we had good goalkeeping, so we were definitely in the game for the first half.”Skyline kept attacking and forcing Cosumnes River to defend their side. Skyline put a lot of pressure on Cosumnes River’s back line. “I think if we would have scored first,” Corsiglia said. “It would have changed the whole completion of the game.”Skyline’s starting outside defender, Nancy Mejia had been injured in practice the day before the playoff game. She wasn’t able to participate in the game, so the line-up had to be changed. “I was actually pretty impressed by the way the group adjusted to their new positions,” Corsiglia said. “But I would have liked us to be a little more aggressive.” According to Corsiglia, this year’s team was a good mix of freshmen and sophomores. “We left it all on the field and I’m really proud of this team,” Cremen said. “We have nothing to be ashamed of, we played hard until the end.”
