Things were looking good for the Skyline Women’s soccer team in their Nov. 14 game, the last one before moving on to the playoffs.
Skyline forced the women of Evergreen Valley College to play the game on their terms, and with Skyline’s superior teamwork and one-on-one skill Evergreen Valley College went down, 3-0.
Skyline did this by keeping the game, for the most part, on Evergreen Valley’s side of the field. Numerous attempts were made at the goal by Skyline players, but Evergreen Valley could barely get the ball to Skyline’s side of the field, much less score.
The first goal was scored by freshman #2 Amanda Dowing in the 40th minute, and the second goal of the first half was scored by freshman #10 Isharene Malave who thought the other team could have done better by pressing harder, and working together.
The score was 2-0 by the end of the first half.
“Things look good now,” Assistant Coach Damian Cohen said.
“We looked good when we were trying to take possession,” Head Coach Kevin Corsiglia agreed. “We’re doin’ fine.” Corsiglia suggested his team should attempt to keep possession of the ball because of the greater options it afforded.
“Relax, receive, play the ball away. Every time you fumble you give them hope. They’re this far from letting you have this game.”
Things in the second half went similarly to the first, and after #8 Simone Torres scored the third goal in the 27th minute, the other team’s belief in itself rapidly declined as the ball slid through the goalies hands.
“We communicated a lot better this game,” #9 Jessica Portillo said. “I thought we did a lot better this year; more united.”
This latest win puts Skyline’s women’s team into the playoffs with a 13-7-1 record. Their statistical performance is quite similar to last year, where they had a 13-6-3 record.
“Every game from here on out has to be full effort” Corsiglia said.
The players are excited to be going to the playoffs. Portillo thinks that “if we step up our game and play like we did in the beginning… we’ll go far in the playoffs.”
For the following players these playoffs will be their last games on the Skyline Women’s Soccer Team:
