The Skyline College women’s soccer team made many attempts on goal, six of which were in the net, which extended their winning streak to three games with the 6-0 victory over visitors College of the Redwoods on Nov. 4. Skyline took an early lead when Taylor Hill scored within the first few minutes. The Trojans took advantage of the mistakes made by the Corsairs. Skyline prevented any attempts on their goal and shut down the whole offense of the College of the Redwoods. “We talked about finishing teams off,” sophomore captain Nancy Mejia said. “So we just have to keep playing our game and not go down to the level of the other teams, we need to focus on how we play.” In this relaxed stress-free game, the Trojans defense denied any type of breakaway for the Corsairs. Everyone on the team got some playing time. For the non-starting players, it was a great opportunity to get some field experience. “We just push each other to keep fighting and that’s what makes us a good team,” Mejia said. The College of the Redwoods only had seven players on the field, and no subs on the bench. Skyline kept things fair by playing down a few players and many bench players got the playing time they had been waiting for.”It was a good learning experience,” sophomore player Natalie Carrola said. “I don’t normally get to play too much, so it was good to actually know what I’m doing wrong and then try to fix it.” In the first half, Taylor Hill scored three goals, Mejia scored one, Carrola was the first to score in the second half, and Caitlin Ford was the sixth and final goal. “Our team communication was really good in this game,” freshman player Jennifer Alvarez said, “We were being really supportive of our teammates; we got the experience of different positions, and we had good sportsmanship.” Even with the victory, the team is still looking for improvements. According to Alvarez, the team needs to work on playing the ball back to the goalkeeper more to keep them active. Another thing is switches, because at times one side of the field is neglected and the team needs to spread out and cross the ball. Carrola agrees and adds, “We could be a much better team with a better first touch.”With the win, the Trojans overall record is 11-6-1 and in conference they are 9-1-0. In the North Region standings, Skyline is ranked 13 out of 36 teams. Only the top 16 teams go to playoffs, therefore their final three games will determine if the team will make playoffs or not.Alvarez said, “We’re doing really well; we’ve had a few upsetting losses but it’s nothing we can’t improve from and if everything goes well for the rest of the season…we should be good for playoffs.”
