“Vote today and WIN a free iTouch” is what every Skyline student saw in their e-mail on May 14. However, many if not 93%, of the school, ignored this message and pressed the delete button on their computer sending it to the nether regions of their e-mail account. But of those that voted 2/3 of the votes came in on Wednesday and Thursday, right after the polls were opened.7.57 percent, or 678 students voted in this election out of the 8,957 students at this school. However, that is increased from last years 5.15 percent, and that was what the ASSC was hoping for.”Our goal is to eventually get better with advertising, instill a need to vote, and instill a need for people to run” Amory Cariadus, adviser to the ASSC, said. This, however, is in Amory’s self-described perfect world in which no one is running opposed, they have more than 15 senators on the ballot, and people from outside of the ASSC are running on the ballot. The ASSC believes that making voting easier will encourage more people to vote and involve more people in the ASSC process. “It’s more convenient” Wendy Smith, ASSC vice-president said. This is proven by the results of the election in which 233 people voted from 6 p.m. to midnight, exactly when the booth would not be open. In previous years the ASSC’s voting system was counted by hand.”It was torture” Wendy Smith said. Cariadus said “Everyone had to get the same number. We were spending four to eight hours counting everything.””I think every year we’re getting a little more refined” Smith said. Last year the ASSC went through a transition period where paper ballots were offered, and attempted to turn the cyber café into a voting booth. In the future Cariadus hopes to “get more people to vote,” and it looks like this will be happening because before this year and the last year less than 400 voted in the ASSC election.
