Having already clinched the second seed in the Coast Conference, their game against Ohlone College was more a time to relax and play and to relieve some long standing pressure than it was to constantly perform at such a high level. The Skyline Trojans, who were a single game out of first place could not string together enough good innings in their game on Tues. Apr. 29 to defeat a mechanically sound Ohlone College team, losing 10-9 at home.”Another one run loss,” said Dino Nomicos, head coach of Skyline’s baseball team. Of the teams fourteen losses, ten have been by one run, and five of those were in extra innings. From the beginning the Trojans pitching was shaky at best giving up four runs in the first inning. After that Ohlone put up runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to conclude their scoring, but the damage was already done with the runs adding up to ten.The drive in the game, especially in the beginning seemed to determine more than it should have. The momentum changed three times in the first three innings and ended with Ohlone keeping it for the remainder of the game. Ohlone first grabbed the energy with a four- run first inning with numerous walks and a batter hit by a pitch. Ohlone then lost it in the second when #5, Rashad Taylor hit a grand slam to help Skyline score 5 times in the inning.Unfortunately Ohlone responded and tied the game in the third on a two out dropped fly ball that allowed two runs to score which put the drive back with Ohlone, this time for good.Skyline’s pitching steadied once #35, Dan March came into the game in the 7th and only allowed scattered hits and no runs, giving the Trojans a chance to come back, which they did.The Trojans put together a rally in the 7th inning with Taylor leading off with a double, which was followed with a single up the middle and an extremely close play at the plate where Taylor Heon was thrown out at home plate; thus keeping the momentum on Ohlone’s side.”I thought he was safe,” Nomicos said, noting that the umpire was in a bad position to make the call; but “that’s baseball.” Skyline again rallied in the 8th inning putting a good scare into the Ohlone team. Once again #5 came through in the clutch with a 2 out 2 run double to make the score Skyline 9, Ohlone 10, just one shy of tying it with one inning to go. Sadly that is as far as the rally would reach, with a single runner reaching first base in the ninth inning before the next batter ended it with a fly out to left field, stinging everyone wearing red.Now the Trojans look forward to the state playoffs on May 9th against a very tough final four team, number 3 ranked Sierra College.Nomicos says that in order for Skyline to be successful and reach the final four of the playoffs then it is going to be up to their pitching, considering that both teams have very potent offenses.
