The Skyline College Runners Club is preparing for the annual ING Bay to Breakers race that will take place on Sat. May 18, 2008. The Bay to Breakers race was started in 1912 after the devastating earthquake that nearly destroyed San Francisco in 1906. It was started to bring the morale of the people living in the city back, and has since become an annual event, according to ingbaytobreakers.com. It is also a sanctioned race that is recognized by the United States Running Association.First prize for the runners is $25,000, although that is not what the team is running for.”The Skyline team will be running for health, fitness, and building positive self-esteem,” said Leo Rosales, president and coach of the club.The annual race is 12k or approximately 7.46 miles, and the professional runners who come from all over the globe to race finish in times of about 35 minutes. The Skyline College Runners club was started when Rosales had the idea to start a running club, and possibly enter the Bay to Breakers. He approached his fitness instructor Sunny Diaz, who agreed and took the idea into a class. Ten students signed up during that time, and now the club has 27 members, and meets regularly to train.Virginia Rosales, vice president of the club did all of the paperwork and got the club acknowledged by the ASSC.According to Rosales the practice times they have are very motivated and the club members are determined to run.The club meets regularly on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, Saturday’s, and Sunday’s, on their last workout the group ran 12 laps around the track, and four laps around the campus. According to Rosales that equals about 7.4 miles, in about two hours.”There is something very powerful in crossing the finish line,” Rosales said. “It does not matter whether you are first or last. It is all about not giving up.”
