Is it just us, or does the semester seem to be dragging on just a little bit longer than it should? Right about now, mid-terms have passed and we’re all looking forward to summer, wishing it would show up faster. As soon as summer comes, it will be over faster than we know, and we’ll be wishing it would last longer. Sounds like we’re living in a dream world, but actually, it’s not too much to ask for. The district is, in fact, considering shorter semesters in the years to come. The idea is to have a 15 week semester and one week of finals. That way we would start later and end earlier, making for a longer summer and winter break. Fall semester would probably begin the week after labor day and end right before Christmas, and spring semester would last from the first or second week of February to somewhere around the second week of June. If this were to occur, classes would have to be longer because by law we have to have a certain amount of class time. But if it will get us out of the semester a bit quicker, a little bit more time in class each day is a small price to pay. Because there would be more time in between fall and spring semester, the district would probably create a winter session. This would allow for students to have the option of taking classes year-round if they so desire. This would be a great opportunity for those who wish to speed along their educational process. Whether or not you choose to use this option, it would be nice to have around. The 15 week semester is not yet near proposal level, and probably won’t go in effect for at least a couple years, according to Patty Dilko, District Senate President. And it won’t be forced on us; the district will be holding focus groups with students and faculty to weigh out the advantages and disadvantages according to how we feel. “Anything that makes students more satisfied is what I’m in favor of,” Dilko said. I don’t know about you, but we like the sound of that.
