Monday, April 7 10-11 a.m. 2 people are in Nancy Kaplan-Biegel’s Journalism 120 class. More students eventually trickle in through the class, but never the full amount. People are cutting her class.Students at this school said they cut class once or twice a week on average. However, very few students conform to this average. Most students conform to one of two groups; they cut 3 or so times a week, or they don’t cut class at all. Those who cut 3 or four times a week usually do so because they are tired or simply don’t want to go to class.”[I cut class] cause I’m lazy and can’t wake” said Lynda Burtoni, 21.Students also cut classes because nothing is due in class and they don’t feel it is important that they show up.”[I’m] tired and want to go home” said Carissa Rubia, 19, when asked about why she cuts class. While students themselves don’t cut class especially often, Skyline students believe that most students on campus conform to the example of those who cut once or twice a week on average.”I think it happens quite a few times but it depends on the type of student, every student is different” said Ramzi Ali, 21.”People like to cut class because in high school they couldn’t” ASSS President Anastasia Kuzina, said.Skyline students believe that their classmates cut class because they don’t feel like going or because they “probably had a party the night before” according to Lynda Burtoni, 21.In reality those that don’t cut class are quite similar to those who do, in respect to job status and unit load, with wide ranges. For example, Angelique Fuentes, 18, rarely cuts class, has 8 units and a job. While Anastasia Kuzina, 21, never cuts class, and has 14 units and a job.The difference according to Kuzina is in where the students are going: Kuzina herself is going to UC Berkley, and “[cutting class] is not an option. If you’re trying to get into a class you won’t risk that.”Kuzina personally believes:”I believe it’s a bad thing, but it’s their personal choice. They paid for it.”Next Issue: How do teachers feel about cutting class?
