It’s not often that professional comedians come to Skyline College willing to entertain students for as low as $15, but then why was the 500 capacity main theatre only filled with 75 people on Coats for Comedy night? According to Wendy Smith, Vice President of the ASSC there was not enough effort put towards selling tickets. “I’m going to say that more effort could’ve been placed on the on the part of the ASSC,” Smith said. “This is me, this is a personal statement but I feel more effort should’ve been put into selling tickets.”
The rescheduling, meant to push more tickets, did little to help reach the 500 ticket goal. The February 22 date was also changed to April 2 because it interfered with a game night that San Francisco State University was having and another comedy show at El Camino High School which was had advertisement here at Skyline. The rescheduling might have also contributed to poor ticket sales from the confusion caused by the date switch.
“It’s hard because originally you have flyers out there saying certain dates, and even though we went around and changed all the dates we should’ve redone all the flyers” Smith said. “The flyers were so expensive for us that we didn’t want to go and spend another $600 for reposting the flyers again so we just revised them.” Of the 75 people that went on April 2, two were staff members, 32 were S.O.C.C. members and nine tickets were given out to A.S.S.C. members. That would mean a total of 32 tickets were bought by students.
The event was not a fundraiser, but more of a donation to the One Warm Coat charity. Even though there were only 75 people in attendance, 73 of the people came with a coat which will all be donated to the charity.
Smith said, “Coats for Comedy itself went really good, the event was really good, but the turnout could have been more.”
