Easily one of the more talked about initiatives among students this upcoming February; Proposition 92 has people excited about what it could mean for Skyline College, among other community colleges.
For those who are unaware of the contents of Prop 92, the initiative, if passed, will lower community college student fees from $20 a unit down to $15 a unit. Also, it will make sure that these fees will not rise for quite some time, as the measure would significantly decrease the Legislature’s authority to increase fees again. Any fee increase planned would have to get a 2/3 vote from both houses.
The measure is also positive not only for students, but for the colleges, as well. In fact, if the bill does not pass, and the fees remain the same as they are now, community colleges will stand to collect approximately $70 million less in annual student fee revenue, according to www.lao.ca.gov.
Students are not the only ones behind this measure. Skyline President, Victoria Morrow, is also in agreement this measure. “I sent them a $1,000 check last year for their signature collection,” she stated in a phone interview. When asked more about the proposition, she went on to say, “one of the things about student fees is that it’s always a rollercoaster ride, and Prop 92 will help stabilize that.” Morrow had virtually no bad things to say about the measure, or at least none in response to anything discussed in the interview.
The measure also amends the state constitution so that it formally recognizes the California Community College system. It amends it by stating that the system is officially a part of the state’s public School System, and is made up of districts that are governed by elected boards. This also means that more money may go into the schools of the state.
