Skyline held their lead over De Anza College by pulling a victory, 4-3, on March 8.
Skyline was the first to bring in a run at the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Ramirez had three hits out of the seven hits for Skyline. Starting pitcher, Marcus Pointer, picked up his fifth win of the season.
Even though Pointer had six strikeouts and only allowed De Anza 5 hits, Skyline struggled with their hitting.
“We’re playing good baseball and our pitching is doing well, hitting is a little off right now” Pitcher Matt Maggiolo said. “If we get hitting back on track, we would be rolling.”
Pointer pitched eight solid innings, and Maggiolo came in for the ninth inning to pitch. Maggiolo pitched a flawless inning, which made this his second save of the season.
During the top of the seventh inning, De Anza tied up the game. It looked as if De Anza was going to take the lead. However, in the bottom of the seventh Nick Borg, Jimmy Parque and Rashad Taylor all hit doubles, which gave Skyline a three point lead.
“Even though we won the game, four runs is well below our average scoring hitting-wise” Maggiolo said.
De Anza was still fighting back and scored two more runs in the eighth inning. They tried getting a rally going in the ninth to win the game, but came one run short.
Although it was a cold and foggy afternoon, many parents and dedicated fans showed up to the game giving their support.
In the ninth inning, Parque picked up a groundball and threw it to first base just in time for the first out. One parent said he had been waiting for a play like that from Parque.
Taylor, left field, made a perfect low catch for the second out. Parque made a routine catch for the third out to end the game.According to Maggiolo, the team can improve by relieving some of the stress he and his teammates put on themselves.
“I think people put too much stress on the game and try doing more than they really have to” Maggiolo said. “Everyone tries hitting that homerun to tie the game, but they just have to let the game come to them.”
Unfortunately, Skyline lost to Monterey Peninsula College on March 11, 8-1. They also lost to Chabot College, 3-2, on March 13. Hopefully, Skyline gains some momentum during Spring break to win over Sacramento City College on March 18th and 20th.
