Three Skyline College Baseball players were honored as 2008 Pre-season All-Americans by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the Baseball America magazine.Greg Gonzalez, Jimmy Parque, and Rashad Taylor were the three players honored on the recommendations of Major League scouts, 4-year college coaches, and junior college coaches. Dino Nomicos, head coach, said that Gonzalez is out for the year on a torn ACL. ACL meaning anterior cruciate ligament, which is located in the knee joint.Nomicos said Parque is “one of the most talented players I’ve ever had in my 22 years of coaching.”Parque is the top rated player in California and is one of the top rated players in the country, according to Nomicos. He’s also getting a full scholarship to St. John’s University and will be drafted in 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. As for Rashad Taylor, who’s been drafted twice by Major League Baseball.”It’s very rare that you get two guys of that caliber on the same team,” Nomicos said. Since last year, Parque and Taylor “have matured, usually you get kids right out of high school and you get them right in the middle of just getting out of high school and their first year of college,” Nomicos said, “There’s a maturity level they had to cross.”Luke Borgo, assistant coach, described this growth in the players as “getting over the hump.”Nomicos said, “Baseball is a hot bed, there’s 90 schools that compete in California Junior Colleges. So there’s a lot of talent.”Luckily for Skyline team, they have a very talented team full of experience and mentality. Even with the loss of Gonzalez, the team is still deep in pitching and good enough to finish in first or second place. Nomicos said, “It’s a good team. There a good group of guys. This could be one of the best teams I’ve ever had.”
