The Skyline Woman’s Basketball team pulled out a victory in overtime against district rival school, College of San Mateo, on Feb.1 in a very close game. The Lady Trojans started off kind of sloppy, but picked each other up and finished the game with heart according to point guard, Marie Colon. Colon said so far in the season no one has considered the lady Trojans as a threat; all they could do is keep their heads up and play their best. The game wasn’t looking good for Skyline in the first half, even though close behind they couldn’t grab the lead. Esmeralda Lopez-Rivas, #22, shot and scored giving Skyline the upper hand in the 17th minute.Through most of the game the score was very close; they were tied over 7 times. The score kept going back and forth between teams. The fouls were high as both teams were playing aggressively, but like the score, they were about even. After many attempts, Adele Faataui, #30, broke the tie between Skyline and CSM as she laid the ball up making the score 29-28 in the 16th minute. But Skyline didn’t keep the lead for long when CSM came back with a shot. The Skyline players on the bench were screaming at the top of their lungs, “D it up…D it up…D it up right now,” in hope of inspiring their players to play a solid defense. Skyline kept cheering and got many fans in the audience to clap along. The fans were also giving heated responses to the CSM team because they were constantly traveling.Around the last minute of the game, suspense was building up in fans and players. Brittney Piccolotti, #23, took a long shot and tied up the game 50-50. As the game moved along with 45 seconds left, Jennifer Matawaran, #21, looked to gain control of the ball but lost it as a CSM player swooped it from her arms. It looked as if no one would catch up to her, but out of nowhere two Skyline players speed up and prevented her from scoring. One of which was Marie Colon, #1, who stole the ball and ran the ball back into the hoop. With 17 seconds left, the teams gathered up for a timeout. Both teams tried attempting some points on the board, but didn’t come out successful. As the time came to an end with only 5 seconds left, Colon took a long shot in an attempt to win the game but missed. It was a close game that didn’t end at the buzzer. At the end of regulation time, the score was 53-53.The ladies went into 5-minute overtime. Skyline focused on aggression and fought hard to win. With a minute left in overtime Skyline was up by 3 and rising as Faataui scores with 10 seconds left on the board. Finally, Lopez-Rivas with the last shot of the night finalized the score to 64-57. Colon said that during the last two years they lost to CSM and this was a comeback win for them especially against their rival team. Colon said, “We never gave up, we have heart, and that’s why we won because of our heart.” Skyline’s overall record is 17-7, 3-2. In their next game, they’ll look to continue their winning streak by taking on their first ever playoff bid on Wednesday Feb. 6 at Chabot College at 5:30pm.
