It may or may not surprise you that the accident rate for 18-24 year old drivers is more than four times higher than that of older, more experienced drivers. For the male drivers in this age range, the accident rate is even six times higher. When you really sit and think about it, it’s a little scary to know that we are a campus full of 18-24- year-old speed demons who might as well volunteer as crash test dummies. Our Chief of Security Mike Celeste says that accidents here at Skyline are actually more frequent in our parking lots than on our roadways, but that’s not to say that speeding isn’t a problem on this campus. Whether or not you believe it’s an issue, even a stranger to our campus will notice that it’s definitely prevalent. Sometimes we just can’t resist driving a little faster than we should. The truth is that campus security does not have the authority to pull a car over for speeding. So maybe we speed because we’re not threatened by enforcement. One thing you may not have known, though, is that the San Bruno and Pacifica police departments are monitoring our speed on campus every day, and they can and they will pull us over if need be.So our advice, which we need to follow as well, is to just slow down when driving on campus. You never know when someone may suddenly try to cross the road, or when someone isn’t looking both ways when turning out of a parking lot, or when any other possible unforeseen incident may occur. Accidents are called accidents because they happen when we least expect them. We owe it to our fellow students – pedestrian or driver- to be a little more cautious on the road. It’s nice to go to class and come back home with no injuries.
