The San Francisco 49ers fell to a dismal two and seven record Monday Nov. 12, after getting trounced in a shut-out victory for the Seattle Seahawks. With seven losses occurring in a row the 49ers offense is rated last in basically all offensive stats. The offense just can’t seem to get anything together.
I know that everybody is willing and ready to jump all over Quarterback Alex Smith for his very lack luster performances and below average stats. But it is not just his fault. For the last three years he has had a different offensive coordinator for each of his seasons and his latest coordinator, Jim Hostler, is a “rookie” when it comes to coordinating.
Jim Hostler has often been criticized for his play calling selections and his rather simplistic take on it. But to me that is not even the most damning thing about his coordinating tenure. The coordinator’s job is to not only play call but to get the offense to execute plays, play inspired, and to be a leader when nobody else will step up. He has done none of that. He needs to be replaced, and hopefully his replacement will do what he could not.
The offensive coordinator is not the only coach that needs to take some blame. Head coach Nolan has not done what he needs to do as a coach as well. His game time decision calling has been questionable at best and his inability to put a fire under his players is appalling. Don’t get me wrong I think Nolan has done a lot for this franchise but in this legendary franchise it’s what you’ve done for me lately and lately we’ve lost seven straight. He needs to shape up and if we have a worst season than the first season he was here, Singletary should be our coach for 2008.
But still the game is played by the players and right now they are horrible. Our once stellar offensive line which was awesome at the run last year have fallen into disparity, Frank Gore, last years pro bowler, has not yet gained more than 100 yards in a single game, and our receivers lead the NFL in dropped passes. Nothing is being executed and the players seem to be playing without inspiration.
Frank Gore is still working hard and if it weren’t for a plaque of penalties by the offense and offensive injuries, he might have an extra 200 yards rushing. But the receivers are down right bad. They are not coming back to the QB after the play is dead and they are running their routes lazily. If our starting receivers don’t care when playing, replace them with players that do. Like Jason Hill and Ashley Lelie.
Players and coaches need to care, because the 49ers faithful do.
