Having read the October 24 article by Mark Morford titled “The Dumbest Generation” we at the Skyline View disagree with the Chronicle columnist. While there is no consensus about whether generation Y is from 1972-2002 or from 1978-1989, both according to USA Today, either of which puts most of the people in this news room into that category, this generation is definitely far too young for it’s historical impact to be considered.Generation Y is only just beginning to get into the workforce, and will soon have to support the retiring Baby Boomers. With this tiny amount of history to look at, how can Generation Y be judged? What were the Baby Boomers like in High School?TV’s in the 60’s had 3 channels, when they were lucky, now TV’s have 300. With new pieces of technology coming out every day people have to learn new interfaces that make old ones useless on a yearly basis. How can Generation Y be called stupid when their parents can’t figure their way around a cell phone? They definitely were not tested as much. While in his column Morford’s friend complains about the amount of testing that Generation Y children have to go through, all of this testing is due to the policies of Baby Boomers. President Clinton was the first Boomer president. With President Bush being the second it looks like we will be under the thrall of the Baby Boomers for a while.Instead of looking at looking at individuals lets look at the generation as a whole. How many Gen Yers vote? In the 2000 election about 55 percent of the voting population was voted. Only about 20 percent of Generation Y was able to vote, while 100 percent of the Baby Boomers were able to vote. How many people has Generation Y killed? While the total is definitely not zero, noone knows, noone has tried to count. Due to the foreign policy of President Bush more than 2500 American soldiers in the Iraq War alone, with the Iraqi casualties uncounted, and how many of those soldiers were in Generation Y?Yes there are dumb people in any generation, but to call a whole generation the dumbest generation is quite loaded. Some of us at the Skyline View suggest that Mr. Morford is simply creating hyperbole in order to increase the publicity of his column. If we were to categorize the Baby Boomers into a generic box then aren’t they all just pot-smoking, draft-dodging, bra-burning, hippies?
