Filling the gym last Friday evening, instead of people, was a sense of emptiness. Under the crowd less stands Skyline’s wrestling team competed, undermanned, against the opposition; Shasta College.Down but not out, Skyline’s wrestling team struggled, but still competed with pride and intensity. Even though Shasta managed to come away with the victory, our Trojans fought them every step of the way. After winning the second match the Trojans were up, but after that the Shasta Knights used their slightly superior manhandling skills to overwhelm our team. Out of four matches we were bested in three, leaving the rest of the Knights of Shasta to capitalize on our short staffed squad. By the 3rd match the Trojans were poised for victory, but as the rounds began to heat up so did the overwhelming support the Knights had cheering them on. As time drew to a close, more and more steam dissipated from our victory train. Points we’re allotted and the winner was chosen; in the best display of sportsmanship this reporter has ever seen, both teams lined up for congratulatory handshakes followed by praise for the win.Obviously disappointed I was pleased to see both teams compete to the best of their ability. Allowing for even the opposition in the stands to recognize our hard work and determination put into the match at hand. The loss will prepare the team as they go forth to compete in Sacramento this upcoming Saturday, in the Sacramento City College tournament. There, undoubtedly, the team will be tested, to compete at their highest level and give it all they’ve got. Whether the Trojan’s are winners or losers everyone is encouraged to show their support as best they can. And though the season has just begun, there are high hopes that go along with our flourishing squad. The team’s next home match against Chabot College Gladiators will surely be worth the watch.
