After two losses, the lady Trojans came back with their first victory as a new team. With only two members returning from last season, and sixteen new players the team shows definite promise. Team coach, Rayinnah Salahuddin says, “this team has the depth and ingredients to go to state.” In the coach’s first year she took charge of only nine girls, however, this season the squad consists of double that amount. Still, together for only two weeks time they are learning to come together as a team. The team unity is creating a foundation and atmosphere for future success in making the playoffs and going to state. They show their team unity on the court by picking each other up after mistakes, even towards the end of the games when emotions are a little more heated. Smiles were glowing on the player’s faces throughout the entirety of the games, showing that they were not only competing but having fun doing so. Along with good team chemistry, the new squad plays with not only brawn but brains as well. Their offense was highlighted by various players viciously spiking the ball [the brawn] and the art of knowing when to tap the ball [the brain], which at times can be more efficient than a spike. At numerous points in their victory the Lady Trojans surprised their counterparts by tapping the ball into an empty location instead of slamming it into the heart of the opposing team. They plan to have a team captain by next week. Still, many girls show prominent leadership skills already, making the choice for the team captain a little harder. The range of talent and depth on the team on both the offensive and defensive ends, will give the new team captain an easier job. When asked what traits from last season the team would like to see re-emerge in this years team, they replied defense and acknowledgement of skill amongst the players. These ladies are dedicated to learning and using teamwork, communication, and friendship to rise up to the challenge of competitive volleyball, not just on the court but in their day to day lives as well. Another goal of the team is to get more people involved in the sport and spirit of the team. A couple of events planned for games this season include pre-game hip hop shows and a raffle. Over the course of the season the team will be raffling off five video iPods, courtesy of the Apple store in Burlingame. In addition, Kelly Burke, a player on the volleyball team, says going to games is a great way to meet new people that are involved with the school and a good way to make new friends. With the variety and talent of the girls on this year’s team the goals are high and no longer a whimsical dream. The excitement will only mount as the team gels together even more, becoming more confident after their first win and trying to take their intensity to the next level for their next game Sept. 11th versus San Francisco City College. With their first win, the ladies take a giant step towards the playoffs, and ultimately, the state championships.
