Almost every student was asked at Skyline College; if they had owned a Myspace 10 out of 12 people admit of owning one. What is the main purpose of having the famous online site Myspace? For most people, it’s for networking with other friends or to meet new people. We all know that, but what if we found our very own teachers own one? What if the same people who teach Math, Science, and English in 45 minute classes used their Myspace accounts to check up on their students? How would teachers feel bout that? Better yet, would the students feel comfortable about it as well?
Rick Hough, a math teacher at Skyline College, does not own a Myspace but if he owned one, would he check on his students?
“No that’s not cool, I want it clean and fair. Its weird it’s almost like a double standard point where students check on their teachers to research on what kind of teachers they are, regardless on Myspace we should all keep our privacy, me checking on a student without your consent I don’t like that idea” says Hough.
Student advisor Amory Carieadus also states that teachers should know enough about their students to teach them but outside everything that should be private. Now from a teacher’s standpoint, the students react to how it would feel if their teachers would check up on them through Myspace.
Lauren Hernandez, J.R Gonzales, and Chris Carasquillo, three current attending students at Skyline College, all shared their thoughts on the teachers checking up on students through Myspace issues and had a lot to say from both different perspectives.
“I believe that if teachers have a Myspace and look at students Myspace they will have a better understanding of the students behavior and personality and that in turn with further help the process of building a greater relationship that may benefit not only the student but the teacher” says Gonzales.
Lauren Hernandez and Chris Carasquillo both suggest the opposite view that the feeling would be awkward if they were ever to find out their teacher checking up on them through their Myspaces.
“Outside of school is our private lives than being a student, they just should just find out about us in class” says Hernandez.
Students may feel uncomfortable that perhaps their teachers may be checking up on them and their personal lives, it could also be another way to track down their students. Some think that teachers with Myspace are a cool thing, but some find it strange because their teachers are from a different generation.
When asked, Skyline Counselor Nate Nevado on the difference with students and Teachers using it he supported it with positive valies.
“Teachers, students, counselors, etc, though we all come from different generations we use it for the same purpose for what it was made for, to communicate with others, if we were ever to get our students attention with a bulletin or as such through Myspace it would totally work. The first thing that a teen does when he goes online is to check his or her Myspace I know I do students and teacher can definitely see what they have to read and etc right away” says Nevado.
Teachers have their opinions on checking their students through Myspace and vice versa with the students. Some of us are comfortable communicating through online some are not all in all we should just learn about each other in our classes.
