The Associated Students of Skyline College (ASSC) increased its members to 19 this semester, making it the largest staff since the fall semester of 2003 – 2004.
The ASSC is in charge of speaking on behalf of a diverse Skyline population of over nine thousand students. The added points of view will greatly influence the distribution of funds and the carrying out of school related events.
“I think it’s great that we have more people,” said Luis Padilla, ASSC president. “We have become more proactive.”
He also says that since they have more members, they have more understanding of student clubs and committees.
The number of members of the ASSC has been increasing by leaps and bounds since the spring of 2006 where they only had three members. Last semester the student council increased by eight, and another eight members this semester, reaching the current total of 19.
“I think, more people add more ideas and we have a lot more involvement,” said Anjelica Gacutan, a student senator in the student council.
Though the added members result in more butting heads, Gacutan is still ecstatic about the large number of council members.
Anastasia Kuzina, a business major at Skyline, and also one of the new members of the ASSC says she joined because she wants to make a difference in the campus. Kuzina said she would bring hard work, commitment and making fair decisions to the table as an active member of the student council.
“As a senator I hope to be an advocate for my constituents and address issues that come to me,” said James Duncan, a member of the Black Student Union (BSU) and a returning ASSC senator.
Duncan says he came back to the student council because he wants to serve the students of Skyline and to make a difference from within the Skyline campus.
The exponential growth of the ASSC is welcomed by Padilla, Cariadus and Duncan but they all agree that as a whole they could do much better.
