A new semester, a new building and a new cafeteria, it seemed like this semester was going to be a brighter one, but after all the ohhhs and ahhhs had settled, a new question arose from the seemingly perfect building – where did the lights go? Students, faculty or anyone who has sat in the new cafeteria in building six after the sun has set, will notice that almost half of the tables and chairs do not have adequate lighting. You will suddenly find yourself in the dark, wondering if a fuse has blown. The designers of the new building lacked foresight in the format of the cafeteria, though very well lit from all directions during the day, in the afternoon, patches of mood lighting are all students get. Another alarming item that someone might come upon is that all construction has ceased and there are no holes on the ceiling to indicate more lights will come in the future. The cafeteria is one of the only places on campus where you can study while eating a super burrito, which is why it is imperative to change this flaw. It is common sense that the cafeteria is primarily an eating area but it is also used by a large amount of not only students but faculty and staff as well, to read in. It is a much more inviting area, unlike the library or computer labs which do not allow either eating or demand utter silence. The large amount of Skyline students who have evening classes should have also been given more consideration. Aesthetics should have been secondary to the layout of the building. Only two things go together with the dim mood lighting in the cafeteria, Barry White and slow dancing, sadly students are not given school credit for either. This situation should be remedied as soon as possible. The lack of proper lighting in the cafeteria is not only an annoyance but is a real problem. It is one of the major focal points of the school, in which everyone from students to school administrators experience a communal atmosphere that all can enjoy. It would be a shame to lose this environment of equality if people start getting grumpy from headaches while trying to read in the dark. The cafeteria is a great asset of the school that should have been given a little bit more attention. The attempt to give students a lounge is understandable, but the simple fact that we are in school should have overridden this trivial endeavor. It seems what we see is what we get, but without proper lighting we can’t even see.
