The Skyline Trojans lose both games this season against our sister school, The College of San Mateo, the latest coming Wednesday, February 7, this time in our own home territory, 57-69.
Skyline led the game early by playing good defense, but it quickly turned in favor of the Bulldogs who were able to catch up, because of so many turnovers and fouls from the Trojans. The last three minutes of the first half, the Bulldogs pulled in front, leading at the half, 24-29.
The second half of the game kept the same intensity as the first. As CSM controlled the game by playing aggressively.
CSM guard, Sabrina Fontenot elbowed Skyline guard, Kelsey Jandoc on the nose causing her to sit out the rest of the game. The elbow did not get called by the referee.
Skyline coach, Brittany Lindhe said, “I was really upset … people are going to continue getting hurt if we don’t start calling [those fouls]. I wish that [the game] was called a little tighter.”
The Trojans lost another player in the middle of the second half. Guard Esmeralda Lopez-Rivas injured her leg while running down court.
The Trojans had difficulties getting the ball inside all night, and ended up taking a lot of outside shots.
“We’re shooters I mean, so I said this earlier, we live and die by our shooters,” said Coach Lindhe
Trojans Guard Marie Colon said, “That’s what hurt us the most. We should have helped our post players a little bit more.”
Trojans forward Salote Tafuna disagrees with her by commenting, “I don’t think that the size matters it’s just knowing that we weren’t rotating fast enough to help [in] the post.”
Although the Trojans lost, Coach Lindhe was optimistic about the season.
“I wouldn’t trade the team I have now. There’s been a lot of growth and improvement for all of them.”
