The Plans for expansion and renovation of Skyline College were discussed by the district’s operation and planning department together with the school’s administrators on January 31.
“It is nice to get the Skyline family together,” according to Jose Nuñez of the district operation department.
The second Capital Improvement Program (CIP) update was a presentation of the plans made by the district for all of the departments of the school to review and critique in order to fit their specifications.
“All we are doing is presenting information update about plans for construction,” said Mark Smolley of the district’s operation and planning department. They plan to gather feedback from the facilities department and the administrators in order to revise the previous CIP.
The presentation started with highlights of the already completed projects of the previous CIP, which were paid for by government bonds in 2001. Pictures of building 6, the new classroom in building 7A, and the new book store were shown.
Then the presentation moved towards the plans for 2007. Skyline students can look forward to a new automotive and cosmetology buildings as well as a renovated central quad. Students should also be relieved that pacific heights will no longer be used to hold classes in. “It would be more practical, especially for parking,” said Steve Gomez, a Skyline student.
Upgrades have been started as early as the beginning of the semester and more were said to follow. In the fall semester of 2007 seismic upgrades are planned be done to building 7, building B7 will be permanently be relocated to the first floor of building B1 and the renovation of the quad. According to Smolley, the construction will be paid for by a second agreement for bond money that was approved in November 2006.
The statements in the presentation were well received by the audience of administrators but, Nuñez stressed that what they showed were only plans and is not etched in stone.
The District operation and planning department project that all construction will approximately end in either 2010 to 2011, but students can’t seem to wait.
“I wish all the buildings looked like this, its really nice,” said Gena Griffin, a Skyline student, while eating at the new cafeteria in building 6.
