“Fob” is the old accent and mispronounced word. “Fob” is the funny clothes, and funny smells. “Fob” is one who “doesn’t understand.” Perhaps the most common definition we may have for the word is “Fresh off the Boat.”
On Oct. 21, Skyline College hosted The Fob Show, produced by Bindlestiff Studio’s Ryan Morales, Dino Ignacio, and Mike Ricca. Skyline’s own Liza Erpelo and Nikki Santiago, along with many other students, contributed greatly for making the event happen. The best description of the show is: truly fresh.
Portrayed were the hardships of those coming from the Philippines to the U.S and trying to fit in and make the most of their new lives. The show had a touch of humor and reality, pleasing the crowd throughout the skits.
The Fob Show was written and brilliantly depicted without showing the people the sad times, but instead the humor in the experiences: from the first time getting lost at Costco, to approaching an American born girl with no accent, or to have a dance battle from both sides of the Filipino and American culture in front of your local library.
The Fob Show’s purpose was to engage the audience on a Filipino’s life at home, school, and outside. Not only did the younger audiences enjoy the show, but for the most part, the adults did as well.
The lives and stories of the characters were easily conveyed and at times became a part of the audience. Everyone enjoyed the comedic performances.
“FOB is where you come from…ang inyong pinangalingan. FOB is who came here before you…ang mga nauna. FOB is YOU….pare-pareho tayo. After all, in the entire history of this nation, aren’t we all FOBs?”
