The breakfast opened with Skyline’s day choir, directed by Professor Jude Navari. The students sang selections from the “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Wiz.”
The breakfast was introduced by Carol Tanzi and Mario Puccinelli, the co-chairs of the breakfast. Also in attendance were the Mayor of San Bruno, Larry Franzella, a 2003 Jump Start program graduate, Sarah Figueroa, President of Skyline College, Victoria Morrow, and the chair of the President’s Council, Greg Cochran.
During the breakfast, a video of Skyline College was presented to the breakfast participants. The video was produced by KM2 Communications, located in South San Francisco. The video consisted of updates the campus has undergone, displaying video that showed the different programs that are part of this campus. These programs include Women on Writing (WOW), the Making the Connection Conference, Expanding Your Horizons, a math and science conference for girls in grades sixth through 12th, and the Jump Start Program.
Before the video, Morrow told the audience what to expect from the new science annex.
“There are going to be state of the art laboratories to ready the students for a career in the medical field,” Morrow said. “There is also going to be a remodel of the athletics building.”
While the breakfast participants were eating, 1985 Skyline graduate, Doug Hupke, spoke about the importance of physical education on campus. There was something that Terry Christman, former P.E. teacher, said to him that he wouldn’t forget.
“They’ll take away your cleats, they’ll take away your mitt, they’ll take away your bat, but they’ll never take away your diploma,” Hupke said.
Before ending his speech, he said, “physical education consists of the mind, body and spirit and without physical education, you take away the person’s spirit.”
Figueroa spoke of how helpful Skyline’s jump start program was for her while she had to deal with adversity in high school.
“I realized what Skyline can do for me,” she said. Now Figueroa is working with disabled and low-income students at Skyline.
