For Campus Ambassador Brenda Valencia, the Guaranteed Enrollment Priority Program, (G.E.P.P.) was the helping hand she needed to successfully enroll in college.
“I’m the first one in my family to go to college,” said Valencia. “I didn’t know what the steps were and was confused.” The G.E.P.P. got her headed in the right direction and allowed her to get the classes she wanted.
The program shows high school seniors the steps to enrollment by administering placement tests, providing tours of college and orientation. G.E.P.P. also gives prospective students an opportunity to earn a half unit of credit , enabling them to register for classes as continuing students.
Campus ambassadors are assigned to different high schools where they set up an information desk and answer any questions students might have about Skyline College.
High school seniors are invited to sign up for a G.E.P.P. day on the spot. Since the beginning of this innovative program, enrollment of G.E.P.P. students at Skyline College has almost doubled from when it started in 2004 from 162 to this year’s estimated 300.
G.E.P.P. coordinator, Kenny Gonzales stated that based on attendance of previous G.E.P.P. days, the Skyline Outreach Committee will be looking to see if an additional G.E.P.P. day can be added. According to Gonzales, the reason for the increase in G.E.P.P. enrollment is the involvement of the college ambassadors who actively recruit high school seniors who otherwise might end up scrambling to get the classes they want.
