Those who got off the plane are then killed one by one in coincidental and sometimes ironic or embarrassing deaths at the hands of an unknown force. This story, called “Final Destination,” introduced the guilty pleasure of watching stereotypical teenagers getting killed in graphically imaginative ways.
Wong continues the trend with part three; the sequel directed by David Ellis; which was released recently. Although the movie retains the vivid death scenes, it’s lacking in the plot department. The story is there, but much like the unknown force that causes the deaths, it isn’t clear what the plot really is.
“Final Destination 3” starts off at a fairground where students from McKinley High school are celebrating their graduation. Wendy, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is at the fairground taking photos for the yearbook.
Her friends convince her to go on a rollercoaster; she then gets “the vision.” Freaked by this, Wendy and several other students get off the ride. The ride breaks from the track and crashes. The survivors begin to die, leaving only three left. The movie then ends with a scene that obviously sets up another sequel.
Although “Final Destination 3” does have a weak plot, things make a lot more sense than they did in the first two movies. The deaths of the cast are staged to be accidental rather than in “Final Destination” where you felt that there was a force present, causing the deaths.
Unanswered questions are left unanswered: How and why did the main characters gain the power to see their own demise? Is “Death” actually a real person/force righting the wrongs done in fate’s plan? Maybe in “Final Destination 4” all will be revealed, but until then, it’s something to think about.
What’s great about the series is that the deaths are all played off of major fears that the average person has, and although the scenes in “Final Destination 3” were graphically pleasing they didn’t seem fitting in terms of what has been done in the past.
Hopefully in the next sequel they’ll get back to the major fears of people, maybe something along the lines of hurricanes, getting drafted for the army, or obesity.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen “Final Destination 3” yet and you’re in for something that’s just fun to watch then check it out. Much like a rollercoaster, the movie is fast, thrilling, and might make you a little queasy.
