If you didn’t know already, this is the last edition of Gamepoint of the semester, which means only one thing…I need to address an important issue that needs to be burned into your brains one last time. Before I get to that, I wanted to rant and rave about what I thought should happen and what shouldn’t happen in the world of sports. But at the moment, I want to talk about a topic that is a lot more important than my bickering. I want to talk about supporting our school sports and its athletes.
I myself am the typical college student; I’m stressed by all the homework and other strenuous activities such as holding jobs and trying to accommodate my friends and family. But, before I joined The Skyline View staff, I never even cared about school sports period. However, being the Assistant Sports Editor has given me the opportunity to see and hear about the amazing athletes of our school excelling in team sports such as basketball and soccer, to name a few. Now that I have the floor, I would like to introduce you to a few successful past and present Trojan athletes.
If you haven’t been keeping up with Skyline sports, here’s a few name droppers that you might want to remember: David Doubley, Alecxis Lara, and Anton Del Rosario. Doubley was a guard for the Skyline basketball team from 2000-02, and went on to play for the University of the Pacific. There, he gained the 2004-2005 Big West Conference Player of the Year Honors and took them to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Doubley has since then signed a contract to play professional basketball in Munich, Germany. If you haven’t been reading Gina Murray’s or my game articles on wrestling, then you don’t know about Alecxis Lara. Lara is ranked 2nd in the state of California and has been dominating this season as a 197 lb. freshman. Del Rosario, a former Skyline soccer player, now plays for Notre Dame de Namur and has played for the Philippines National Team just a year ago.
These athletes have gone on to bigger and better things. The one thing they all have in common was that they played sports for Skyline College. And yet, with all the accolades they have received, you don’t hear about their successes around school. Yes, I know you might say that’s why there is a school paper, but nothing beats attending a live game and rooting for your school and your friends. From what I’ve seen this fall from soccer games, attendance could be better and although basketball home games are at the College of San Mateo (CSM), San Mateo is only half an hour away.
All I’m asking is for a little support for your school’s sports. A lot of money was spent on a state of the art soccer field, a new baseball field, and the gymnasium is currently being renovated. Why not check out where these thousands of dollars were put into? Show them some love.
