It’s hard to believe that the semester is coming to a close. We’ve miraculously survived a whole year of fashion dos and fashion don’ts and we can proudly say that we have been a part of fashion history. This time around, instead of focusing on one particular item, I’ve decided to go through all of the trendiest items that have hit the waves of Skyline students in the Fall 2005 semester.
Uggs and those boots with jeans tucked inside…Ladies, you must admit, you once thought that those hideous boots would never make its way to your closest, but let’s be real and say that you now own a pair. The Ugg boot craze has finally hit the Bay Area and has caught on quite well. The acceptance of the boot allows young women, and some guys out there to be creative and sport out the “outdoor snow bunny” look without having to go all the way to Tahoe. Not only has the boot become a fashion must, the latest trend of jeans stuffing has also caught on. Ladies are flocking to get their own ‘slouching’ pair of boot, usually baggy enough to tuck in most jeans.
My prediction for 2006? Boot cut jeans are going to be a thing of the past and a more tapered ladies jean will become more vital because of the jean stuffing trend.
White tees and black jeans…How influential can music be? Well let me count the ways. Today’s fashion inspired teen would have probably stepped out of the house at least once, just wearing a white tee. With such Bay Area groups such as Frontline and Federation, Keak da Sneak, and E-40, the Bay has come to its all time low with this look. (Yes, I said it. But let’s be honest about that). How basic can this get? And what upsets me are the long tees that these little kids are now sporting. They’re already short. How much shorter can they get though? Let’s get real and move on from the boring tees and hopefully start dressing ourselves to be a little bit presentable.
My prediction for 2006? The Bay Area music scene will definitely get bigger and better, but the artists sporting the clothes will finally get a style of their own and hopefully start to dress up in a much better manner. Hopefully most of the kids will catch on and start appreciating more classic and trendier attire. Look for well dressed men sporting some crazy designer labels.
Boho-lux and bohemian cowgirl look…It’s hilarious that just a year ago young women would want and would only wear clothing that is extremely tight fitting and revealing. Funny that come 12 months later, a whole new craze has erupted from the likes of Lindsey Lohan, Ashlee Simpson, and Keira Knightley. Yes, the boho-lux look is the official name of that ridiculous, yet trendy satire of hobo/bohemian inspired look that all of these girls are wearing. The style consists of layering. Not just your average one shirt over another, but a tanktop, a shirt, another shirt, and then a sweater. This look has gotten the attention of women all over the Bay Area, including those in Skyline College. Most women accessorize a lot to project the “I don’t care” look, but guys, they do still care.
My prediction for 2006? I feel that the look will evolve to something different come Spring 2006. A little more airy and less covered will emerge from this look, but the same “I don’t care” feel will remain.
The Metrosexual…Most guys are beginning to empty out their closest and have started to finally care about their own appearance. During the past year, the whole metrosexual spiel has come out, and allowed straight men to embrace dressing a little trendier and sexier. Men of all race, creeds, and upbringings have given this “clean and well-kept” look a shot. We now see rap artists such as Mos Def and Kanye West coming out with much classier attires, and even P. Diddy, becoming a spokesperson for proactive. Where is this trend taking American’s perception of a man? This can possibly be a good thing or a bad thing. You decide.
My prediction for 2006? This look will forever stay, if not, grow bigger than what it already is. Men care about what their women want and most women care for a well kept man who knows how to dress. The metrosexual look will become a staple for young men to keep up with and for some, even grow into. In years down the line, the name of this style may in fact change, but the consistency of dressing to impress will forever be a fashion must.
This semester has been a great time for reinventing today’s fashion trends. Remember: things of the past may in fact come back, but revamped and restyled. Watch out for those old school looks, and hopefully I’ve kept you on point with your fashion choices. We’ll see you next semester.
Happy Shopping!
