The Skyline men’s soccer team has had their share of ups and downs since their season began Sept. 3rd. The Trojans are currently in a 5 game losing streak, only having won 2 games so far this season and are ranked 10th in northern California.
Although they are 2-6-2, the Trojans’ record fails to indicate how hard they’ve been working and how many close games they could have won.
“We’re out here everyday so we’re still working hard and we’re learning everyday,” said Daniel Link, men’s soccer coach. “So were still improving,”
It has been a trying season for Coach Link, who at this point last season, his Trojans posted a record of 6-3-3.
According to Coach Link, scoring goals have been the team’s biggest troubles.
The Trojans have been shutout twice, 4-0 to Taft College and 3-0 to Canada College. The men are still winless at home but Link and the Trojans remain optimistic.
“We’re creating opportunities but we’re not finishing goals,” said Link. “That’s been the biggest problem…that and team defending because defense wins championships.”
The Trojans are currently 2-6-2 but their record is deceiving unless you have seen their work on the field. Although the Trojans have been shutout in two of their games, they have kept it close even in a losing effort to West Hills and a second time against Taft, in both games falling one goal short.
Although it has been an unpredictable season, the one bright spot of the season has been Jose Ruiz who leads the team in goals scored with five.
“Jose is the most dominant striker and the fastest with the ball,” said Ruben Salazar, co-captain.
On Sept. 27th, the Trojans played their first Coast Conference game of the season against Cañada, once again falling short 3-0. Although the Trojans out shot Canada 19-15, they still couldn’t find the net.
“Against Cañada, we didn’t work the ball around, everything was rushed so we didn’t play our game,” said Salazar. “We didn’t pass well and we simply didn’t score.”
On Oct. 4th, the Trojans played visitor to undefeated Santa Rosa Junior College for their final non-conference game of the season. Jose Ruiz scored the lone goal as the Trojans fell 2-1.
The Trojans return to conference action Oct. 11th, as they host rival City College of San Francisco at 2pm.
