American Idol is the reality show everyone is raving about. In this show we watch everyday people become stars. The whole concept of the show seems squeaky clean and fair. If you can really sing well, you’ll make it in. Not really. The truth behind the show is it doesn’t matter how you sing. The only way to get in is if you have the ability to keep the show’s ratings up, and the people who keep it up are those who cannot sing a note. Producers need people who can’t sing to keep the show alive and funny. They do this by making people believe they can be the next American idol and embarrass them in front of millions of people. How do you think William Hung got in? He was terrible, but he is what they want. People like Hung keep the viewers watching. This is why at the auditions they don’t look for people who sing, they look for those who will make Simon say, “That was the equivalent of music wallpaper.”
Occasionally, they will actually let really good singers in, that all fit the profile. The profile is you must be attractive, sexy, and be able to sing some note. Or you could just fit the types of people they want in the top 12. In every show there is the same group of top 12 finalists: the geek, the big guy with the big voice, a few different types of people such as rockers or pop stars, and the divas. The divas are the ones who make the show great, with all the so-called catfights and scandals. In season 4 they had the two rockers. If they didn’t let rockers in, the show would become repetitive and dull. They would be using the same type of people and music, over and over again. The top 12 is what they present to the public to tell the people their contest is completely fair, but it doesn’t keep the show running. What gets the ratings up is the crazy people and Simon yelling at them about how terrible they are.
If this is the case, why do people sleep outside? Why do they even still watch the show? For those who sleep outside, they still believe in the actual chance of getting in and making it to Hollywood, even though the guy with the Elvis costume who sings like a frog has a better chance of getting in then they do.
The answer to why people still watch the show is because it’s entertaining. As long as the program produces terrible singers as eup. Media is not about change; it’s about ratings and money now. The only hope is to wait for it to die out. Even though the show has scam written all over it, no one really cares. They just want their 15 minutes of fame one way or another.
