Even if you are new to Skyline College you are most likely aware by now that there is some kind of election coming up. Associated students of Skyline College (ASSC) has put on several events since the start of the semester, welcoming Skyline students and informing them of the upcoming election on September 6 and 7. Remember the donuts and coffee you enjoyed last week before you dashed off to your morning class? Or the barbeque you attended the Friday after you enjoyed those donuts? Or maybe you remember the pancakes you had the following week at the pancake breakfast? All of these events were put on by the student government and the 2 candidates; Taylor Angel and Melchie Cabrigas were to be found at most of them.
As a 2 year, commuter school, most Skyline College students may not invest a lot of their time into worrying much about Skyline College’s student government. They have a hard enough time worrying about paying their tuition and passing their classes to even bother with such a seemingly trivial thing as worrying about which candidate is going to win the student government’s election. Students aren’t too concerned about what their representatives are up to because they may feel that they have much bigger issues to worry about usually involving their lives at home or work.
But what about all those events listed above that you may or may not have attended, did you enjoy them? Maybe you didn’t enjoy them? Or perhaps you could care less. But even if the student government activities isn’t one of your top priorities there is probably somethings you would like to see done differently on this campus. If you have a complaint or suggestion the best thing to do is to let yourself be heard. Nothing is going to happen if you keep your mouth shut or worse yet, leave your ballot unmarked.
Get to know your presidential candidates, find out what they stand for and vote for the candidate you feel shares your views more closely or who you think will act as the better president. You will be making a statement and that is what is important, letting your voice be heard. Your money is going into this election in the form of the $8.00 (optional) student body fee you paid. Not voting is almost like throwing that money away.
If you vote for Taylor Angel or Melchie Cabrigas and find that once in office that particular candidate doesn’t meet your needs as a student then you have the right to go to them directly and complain. You voted so therefore you would have the right to exercise your power as a student of Skyline College.
So this September 6 or 7 make sure you get out and vote, let your voice be heard, and let the best Man (or Woman) win.
