It’s another fall semester here at Skyline. Classes are starting, students are buying books, and a presidential election is right around the corner. In these pressing times, we, the staff of The Skyline View, feel it is utterly important that students, staff and faculty alike seize the opportunity to vote. But, in order to have that opportunity, you must first get yourself registered. It is very easy to get registered. All you have to do is go to your nearest post office or DMV and ask for a registration form, follow the simple guides to filling it out, and then mail it off. Now you may be asking, “View staff, why should I register to vote?” Simple-because it’s your right to help decide how this nation is governed. And not just the nation, but how your state, county, and city are governed as well. And, well, you have to be registered to access that right. Every day, decisions are being made that may affect your daily life. Don’t you want to be involved in the decision making process?”But I don’t understand the issues.” So do some studying. You can find information on issues by surfing the Internet. Or simply write to your local legislator, for example Tom Lantos or Nancy Pelosi, with an inquiry.”But staff, how am I going to make a difference? I’m only one person?” Well you should get off your lazy, paper reading butt, and spread the good word. Ask your friends if they are registered, and if they’re not, help them with the process. Go to the post office or DMV and take stacks of registration forms, then go pass them out to the public. Rally yourself some forces. It’s time to effect change.”Wait a second, last election the votes said that Gore had won, yet somehow Bush ended up in office. I’m still not convinced that registering and voting does any good.” Well give it a try. Who knows, maybe it does work? And then if it doesn’t, gather up your forces and go organize a protest. Effect change through revolution, like our founding fathers. That would be the truly patriotic thing to do.
