The Skyline women’s badminton team defeated Fresno City College 19-2 to up their record 2-0 in the early season on March 25.In the singles round Trojans won five games out of six against Fresno City. Stephanie Cheung the top rated singles player on the badminton team, defeated her opponent 11-0,11-1 over Sheng Lee. Celine Sin defeated Julie Jensen 6-11, 11-6, and 11-7. Lisa Payte defeated Kiely Jones 11-2, 11-0. Jennifer Wong won via forfeit and Dan Tan defeated Alejandra Alvarez 11-5, 11-2. The lone defeat of the singles round one play for Skyline was by Gloria Cheung she lost 2-11, 11-8, and 11-1. Doubles round one play the Trojans swept Fresno winning 3-0. Payte and Sin defeated Jensen and Jones 11-3, 7-11, and 11-4. Wong and Tan won by forfeit. Stephanie Cheung and Gloria Cheung were victorious over Lee and Nakahara 11-1, 11-2. “As a whole our team this year is very solid from 1 through 7,” Head Coach Joan Fosberg said in an e-mail interview. “I was happy to see our number two doubles team beat Fresno’s number one Lisa (Payte) and Celine (Sin) have come together well.”Singles round two Skyline ladies won five of six games from Fresno City for the second time in the meet as Stephanie Cheung defeated Jensen 11-0, 11-0, Sin defeated Lee 11-5, 11-6, Gloria Cheung won over Jones 11-1, 9-11, and 11-8. Wong defeated Alvarez 11-2, 11-4, and Tan won by forfeit. The only defeat for Skyline was by Payte as she lost to Nakahara 9-11, 10-11, and 12-13 in a close contest. In the team’s next meet they will face conference foe City College of San Francisco.”Our team looks very good at this point but we have yet to play CCSF (April 1),” Fosberg said. They will be our toughest competition since they are an experienced team with 11 players on the roster, their number one player has yet to lose a match and they are solid from one through four.”Finally in doubles play round two the Lady Trojans swept two games over Fresno City College as Stephanie Cheung and Gloria Cheung beat Jensen and Jones 11-0, 11-1. Payte and Sine were victorious over Lee and Nakahara in a close contest 11-9, 11-9. This team is young as most of the members are freshmen. In the next year or so they will have some depth.”Hopefully we’ll have everyone back next year. If so, yes, we’ll have a lot of depth and, with the addition of a few freshmen should be verystrong.”
