Skyline College’s student handbook, planner and website clearly state its drop policy: if students drop 50 percent or more of their enrolled classes, and takes a “W” for they will be put on academic probation, could lead to academic dismissal. Academic probation is when students are placed on a trial basis to determine whether or not they are eligible to proceed with the next semester of classes. Furthermore, academic dismissal is when students are dismissed from day and evening classes for at least one semester before they can petition for reinstatement. We at The Skyline View feel that it is the administration’s responsibility to let students know they are in academic trouble before they are put on probation. We also feel that it is the counselor’s responsibility to let students know that if they drop classes and take the “W,” they are putting themselves in jeopardy of being on probation, which can lead to academic dismissal.Students who have enrolled in at least 12 semester units and have dropped 50 percent or more of the enrolled units after the fourth week with a “Withdrawal”, “Incomplete” or “No Credit” will be put on academic probation. In order for students to get off of academic probation they must follow certain strict procedures.Students can either petition the Standards and Policies Review Committee for removal from probation if they have unusual circumstances beyond their control or they can remain in all of their classes (meaning they do not drop any of their currently enrolled classes). Usually the school tries to take action before a student is officially dismissed, but not every student who is academically dismissed is notified properly. Those student’s who have not been informed about their dismissal find out about it when it is too late.It is understandable that students should read their handbooks; they are adults and should be responsible for their own actions. If students do not live responsibly now, then they may never get around to being responsible in real life, which is what college is preparing them for. However, many students who are coming right out of high school have no clue what college is really about. Policies and responsibility for oneself are not learned easily; rather, they are learned through life’s many trials and errors. With an advance notice from the administration and the counseling department, these students can prevent most, if not all, academic trouble. This course of action would also enable students to realize the importance of the policies here at Skyline and make their future stay trouble-free.We do not want to put all of the blame on the administration and counseling department, but we do want students to be aware of this policy. If these departments make more of an effort to stress the importance of the drop policy, maybe we will not see as many students dropping classes such as English 836.To ensure students’ success, this cooperation should be initiated by the administration and the counseling department. After all, student success is everyone’s goal.
