Jenn: As of Oct. 21, 2003 the Senate imposed restrictions on abortion for the first time since 1973. They are getting ready to make it illegal for women to have what is called a “partial-birth” abortion. This has been an ongoing battle for many years and it looks as though many of those who are pro-choice will be facing what will be a series of battles in the courtroom. The government should not be imposing their ideas of what a woman should do with her body. The only thing human beings own in this life is their body and by taking away a choice a person decides to make for their body then they are taking away a piece of their humanity.Aaron: Then again, we’re not specifically talking about a woman’s body, but about the body of the baby inside the woman. If we believe that everyone only owns their body, then a fetus, or a baby, owns their body. In this case, by allowing a woman to have an abortion, we’re not taking away, as Jenn said, a piece of their humanity, but all of it.Jenn: The key word there is fetus. A fetus is an embryo, not yet considered a human being. And you say that we are not specifically talking about a woman’s body? Are you kidding me? A woman has to carry the fetus around for nine months of her life, it grows inside of her, so for you to say it’s not apart of a woman’s body is absurd. Therefore she has the complete right to say what happens to that fetus because in reality it is her body.Aaron: The government just passed a law basically stating that a fetus is considered to be a person. And in regards to it being a part of a woman’s body, what about the male who may want to have the baby and who took part in making that ‘fetus?’ Does he have a say in what should be done to the ‘fetus?’Jenn: Good point. A woman has the right to make her own decision and these days the male can take the woman to court if he really wants the baby. There have been cases where men have sued women for having aborted babies, however in the end it really is up to the woman because it is her body.Aaron: You’re entitled to your opinion, but for the most part, I feel that the contributing male cares more for a live baby than a dead one. Also, maybe the pregnant mother should take into consideration that the growing fetus, or baby, in her womb is half of her and half of the father. With that in mind, having this baby is feasible to both parents: the mother gives away the child she doesn’t want to the father and in return, despite the pains of pregnancy and child-birth she’s free of responsibility to the new-born.Jenn: Yes you are right I am entitled to my own opinion and when it comes down to it, that is what abortion is: someone deciding based on their own opinion and ethics as to whether or not they should have a baby. You are basing everything your saying on moral issues, which is good and fine, but in reality we cannot decide for others what is right for them. If we break abortion down to what it really is, it is a person having the choice as to what is right for them and giving them control over their body. In the end it is left up to the woman to make the decision as to whether or not she is ready for a baby.Aaron: I agree, we can’t decide what is right for other people, but based on the law, fetuses and babies are considered people too and therefore, a woman doesn’t have a right to decide whether it should live or not, because as you said, no one does. You mentioned that a fetus is a part of the woman, growing inside of her and the woman has a right to decide what to do with her body. That’s selfish because the baby is growing as a part of the mother to be its own organism, giving it, or others, the right to speak on its behalf.Jenn: Funny you mention that babies cannot make that decision for themselves, yet you are saying that government can make that decision for them? That is a contradiction, a woman cannot decide for the fetus but the government can? I highly doubt that the government will be taking an active part in that child’s life, so I don’t believe it should be left to them to make that decision for the woman or the fetus.Aaron: Well I guess time will only tell.
