Michelle Canalita, a dance student, put together a group of students to form a cheerleading team in Skyline.According to Canalita, some fellow dance students encouraged her to bring cheerleading back to Skyline after she told them she had been captain of the campus’ squad in 1993 and 1994. She is currently captain for the San Francisco junior forty-niners and has experience in different forms of dancing, including ballet and hip-hop.Canalita and another four judges held tryouts in Skyline’s wrestling room on Oct. 17. All five judges have dance and cheering experience-they will also be part of the squad.Eleven students showed up to tryouts, all of whom were accepted in the team. “I was just impressed,” Canalita said. “We ended up accepting everybody because they all were very good.”Stacy Morell, dance major and another one of the judges, choreographed a cheer during tryout. She coaches cheerleading at Cappuccino High School. She said to be content with the turnout.”It was a big turnout,” Morell said. “I’m glad we are going to have a big squad.”Canalita said that they are still in the process of making the cheerleading club official. One of the requirements they still need to fulfill is to have a full-time faculty advisor. She added that Andreas Wolf, athletic director, is helping her with counseling on possible ways to find one. This process has apparently been somewhat complicated for them because many of the people who are available to do it are part time faculty. They had arrangements to meet with the people who are confectioning their uniforms on Oct. 22-they will pay for them out of their own pocket. They want to get the uniforms on time for the beginning of basketball season starting Nov. 12.According to Canalita, the squad will be cheering only at basketball games because it is difficult for the cheerleaders to attend all sports. They will attend most other games and wear the uniform on all home game days to show support for all Skyline sports. The team might have up to three male members, who have limit their participation to team stunt performances in some of the games.”We have a squad of eleven females and two or three guys,” Canalita said. “The guys are only going to help with partner stunting-they will be in some of the games and competitions because we want to make it to competition this year.”
