If you know you’re stressed, or think you’re stressed, don’t panic! Skyline has services that can help you feel better and do better this finals week.
According to Barbara Wylie, health center coordinator, a flurry of students drop in around finals week with physical complaints brought on by stress.
The Health Center, located next to the counseling offices in building 2, has pamphlets full of advice and helpful, trained staff that handle mental stress and physical problems. They are equipped to handle the mental stress and physical problems students encounter.
Wylie’s advice is to avoid stress by planning ahead. Put deadlines in your planner. Include time in your schedule for regular stuff, including social time, meals and exercise.
“Your brain is an organ that needs rest, nutrition, and time off,” Wylie said. Here are some more tips that Wylie suggested for a less-stressed finals session:
* Don’t neglect schoolwork, but set limits. Study in a group and divide up big assignments.
* Get help. Use instructors’ office hours, and get them to clarify hard material. The Learning Center (below the library) has tutors that can help stuck students.
* When it’s time to study, you should use normal coping mechanisms. First, you should reduce demands, break down tasks into manageable pieces and leave time for regular meals including sleep.
* Many students abuse themselves by drinking too much coffee, or bingeing. This may lead to a crash that will slow you down and make it impossible to function.
* Get to know the finals schedule. It is on page 75 of the Spring Class schedule. Arrive early, well-rested and breakfasted.
* The Learning Center has compiled a list of hints on taking essay-exams. Ask them for a copy if you have this kind of test to take.
