Election packets to run for a position within the Associated Students of Skyline College government have been released onto the Skyline college website, which means students are free to fill them out and turn them in if they are interested in becoming part of ASSC from Fall 2026-Spring 2027.
Vice President Jarred Ramos said that students do not need prior experience with ASSC to run for any position within the government. The only requirements in order to qualify are a GPA above 2.0 and enrolled in 6 units prior to registering to run for a senator position. A GPA of 2.75 or above is needed to run for a presidential or vice presidential position.
“We want to keep it open for folks, because, in the end, this is also a learning experience,” Ramos said.
Ramos explained that the packet contains questions to gather information about the runner’s skills, their interest in running, and what issues they believe needs attention by ASSC. Runners will also need to have a referral from a professor to vouch for their work ethic and ability to be a great candidate; as well as a second referral by a staff member, such as a counselor or program coordinator. Lastly, a video has to be created demonstrating the runner’s values and reason for running.
After all packets have been collected, candidates are required to hold two campaigning events to advertise themselves for election, which Ramos mentioned was his favorite part of the process when he ran for office.
“I think that’s the most interesting part for me because it was me just getting to know other people who were running, and seeing what caused them to run, but also just getting to know them is really cool,” Ramos said.
Ramos also gave a brief description of what kind of students they are looking for.
“We’re looking for anyone who is open minded, who’s willing to grow and, you know, become a leader in this space,” Ramos said.
After the runners have a chance to campaign, Ramos explained that the voting will take place online. Every Skyline student will receive an email from ASSC which will give them a chance to vote for the candidate of their choosing. By Friday April 24, the winners for each position will be announced.
Students looking to run should have their packets and video submitted to ASSC by the due date of Thursday, April 9.
