The Trojans were host to Mission College Sat. March 1, where they won 8-4 in a big hitting game.
“We are playing well in all three aspects of the game right now, pitching, hitting, and fielding” said an assistant coach after the game. They had 11 hits and one error; and pitcher Nick Jurado struck out four batters in nine innings of work. This team is looking very promising and if they continue playing this way were in for a great season.
“We’re playing extremely well right now and are in first place” said Head Coach Dino Nomicos after the game. The Trojans are 13-3 overall and 2-0 in Coast Conference Play. They are having a great start to the season, and looking to continue on their momentum.
Seven of nine hitters for the Trojans had at least one hit. Third baseman, Jeff Ramirez, and first baseman Joe Nisco each had three of the team’s eleven hits. Six of the nine hitters scored the 8 Trojan runs, CF McCarthy and Jeff Ramirez scored two each.
Jeff Ramirez has been having quite a season so far. He has four homeruns and 18 runs batted in sixteen games this season. He had two homeruns and six runs batted, including a grand slam and a two-run homerun. However, this game versus Mission was probably his best this season.”I was throwing strikes and getting guys out,” said starting pitcher Nick Jurado. “I pitched the whole game”. While pitching all nine innings with only four strike outs and no walks, Jurado was confidant in his team. Although he gave up 12 hits, the defense behind him only allowed four of them to score. Another high note of the game was the fact that Skyline’s defense had no errors.
Prior to this game on the 28th skyline defeated Cabrillo college 6-0 in their coast conference opener. Sergio Contreras struck out two and walked a couple in seven innings. It’s always great to begin a season with a shutout.
On Tuesday March 4, the Trojans hosted arch rival CSM, however the game was called off after ten innings due to darkness. It will continue on Tues. April 22 when CSM returns to Skyline for a regularly scheduled game.
